Urban (or ghetto) fiction is still an emergent genre, coming out of the black urban experience. It can be read as a voice from the streets, similar in language and subject to gangsta rap music. Generally, urban fiction seems to feature coming-of-age themes, serving as a cautionary tale to readers from the author's own experience.
