Speculative fiction is a general term for works that spring from the question "What if...?" Speculative fiction can deal in the world of the real, or the unreal, and the author's vision need not be plausible. This type of fiction can be split into science fiction and fantasy streams, depending on what musings the work addresses, and how it answers those hypothetical questions.
